The Sunshine Coast provides for a more peaceful, less-paced lifestyle. With over 56,000 hectares of parks across the District, there is a wealth of opportunity for recreation.
With a good supply of affordable Real Estate, within a, lets say, "relaxed" proximity of Vancouver, BC, the Sunshine Coast is becoming an increasingly popular destination.
The Sunshine Coast is only 90 minutes from Vancouver and has the Lowest benchmark Real Estate price in the Greater Vancouver area. That's right. Now, think about this. The lowest prices for Paradise? Natural beauty, within a relaxed proximity of Vancouver .
BC Ferries Langdale ferry runs every two hours from Horseshoe Bay, on the Lower Mainland, to Langdale, a 40 minute sailing across the beautiful Howe Sound. I guarantee, this to be the most relaxing commute you have ever had. Current Conditions captures the live camera feeds from the Ferry Terminals, providing an excellent, real-time look at how busy it is at the ferry terminal (boarding lanes & entrance). From there, Highway 101 is the main artery that skirts the ocean's shoreline, proceeding North, from the Langdale Terminal.
If you are considering commuting from the Sunshine Coast to work in Vancouver, you're not alone. There are now 4 Commuter Vans that actually board the Langdale Ferry, Monday - Friday, offering commuters the option of door-to-door service, between work & home. These vans pickup commuters, drive onto the ferry and drop off each commuter at their workplace. There are a number of other pooling options available. For details, see Van Pools.
Across the Lower Sunshine Coast, there are two Municipalities: Gibsons and Sechelt. Outside of these municipalities, your local government is the Sunshine Coast Regional District. Sechelt, the land between two waters, is the largest town in the area, with a population of approximately 8,500.
Gibsons is home to "The Beachcombers", the longest running TV drama in Canadian history. Today, Molly's Reach (photo right) operates as a full menu restaurant in the heart of the seaside village of Lower Gibsons.
Within easy walking distance of Molly's, you'll find quaint shops, wonderful restaurants, local art galleries and a healthy supply of both parkland and beach. Building on its rich heritage, tourism continues to thrive in the Gibsons area.
With a very active economic development office, Gibsons is in the process of re-defining itself. While there is a strong desire, across the community, to hold onto that small town friendly pace, we also recognize that we do need to grow and evolve, in order to remain healthy. For some time now, it has been clear that we can no longer expect Forestry and Fishing to sustain our economy and have made great strides towards reducing this dependency. Read all about it, at the Gibsons Community Iniatives Association.
The Town of Gibsons has a population of over 4,200. Beyond Gibson's town borders to the East are the communities of Granthams Landing, Hopkins Landing, Soames Point, Langdale and Port Mellon. This area is referred to as West Howe Sound, Area F.
On the West side of Gibsons you will find Area E, or Elphinstone, which includes areas such as Gower Point, Bonniebrook, and Woodcreek Park. Roberts Creek, Area D, is then West of Elphinstone.
There has recently been much conversation and analysis about Area E and Area F combining with Gibsons to form a larger municipality, offering tax payers improved economies of scale and better able to control the growth we are facing.
The main economic activities across the Lower Sunshine Coast are retail, health care/retirement services, manufacturing, tourism and construction. The leading industries, by employment in 2006, were Manufacturing, Tourism, & Construction. <Click here> to read all about it.
The public school system maintains 10 Elementary and 4 High Schools under School District #46 on the lower Sunshine Coast. In simple terms, there is one High School in each of Gibsons, Sechelt and Pender Harbour, plus an alternative school in Gibsons. Each school has a geographical catchment area around the school. This determines which school your children will attend. Exceptions are allowed on a case by case basis.
